Research in Practice and TACT have published a report on a joint piece of research designed to explore the impact of the first COVID-19 lockdown on young people in and leaving care, and their carers. The report summarises the findings from three online questionnaires aimed at young people in care or with care experience, carers, and birth parents, which were open between June and July 2020. Over 400 responses were received (116 from young people, 302 from carers and 7 from birth parents) revealing a wide range of experiences. Some young people had struggled with the lack of routine and being separated from family and friends, but for many, lockdown led to an increase in quality time and improved relationships with those they live with. The flexibility around home learning and virtual contact with families was also appreciated by some young people. The report includes a discussion on the implications for practice and concludes that social care adaptations during lockdown have had some positive outcomes, including that digital substitutes can be a valuable tool for social care practitioners when used in a strengths-based and person-centred way.
