Championing Positive Values: A Call to Action on World Social Work Day from Alan Wood, Director of Operations at FosterTalk
On World Social Work Day it feels more important than ever that shared positive values which are respectful; community, family and child-focused; and inclusive are championed at all opportunities by Social Workers in every form of contact we have, every day with all those we work with and alongside.
Social Work can play a unique role in the identification and bringing together of disparate; conflicting and confusing experiences; views and methods of expression. This determination to work together to identify safer; more inclusive and meaningful pathways is what drove many of us towards Social Work as a profession.
Within FosterTalk; Fostering First UK; Fostering First Ireland; and Plan B/Familiehjelp in Norway I experience excellent Social Work Practice every day across a dynamic and diverse range of services.
By truly listening to and hearing the views of others that are sometimes difficult to access or accept we can come to a common understanding and agreement. This is a core task of Social Work. So as we sit at our desks; or in the Courtroom; conferences, meetings; hospitals; foster homes; residential care homes or any of the whole range of settings Social Workers are present, take a few moments to think about how our individual attitudes and actions are driving opportunities and outcomes for those we are privileged to work with.
