BACK TO NEWSOn Thursday 21st April, MPs held a general debate on the recruitment and retention of foster carers which was put forward by Kate Osborne.
Will Quince, The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Education stated ‘On financial support, foster carers have a unique role. They are not employees, and I very much believe that no foster carer should be out of pocket due to their fostering role. There are clear national minimum standards, which is an allowance that covers the full cost of caring for a child. We set that, but most local authorities go considerably beyond it. It is updated annually in line with inflation. Again, we are looking at that closely as part of the independent review of children’s social care, because we know that we need more social carers. I will look carefully at the outcome and the recommendations.’
